Avatar: Fire And Ash Airborne Battle Used Real Flames for Maximum Impact

James Cameron’s highly anticipated sequel, Avatar: Fire And Ash, is set to push the boundaries of cinematic immersion once again. One of the film’s most spectacular sequences — an airborne battle between the Wind Traders and the Ash People — was brought to life using real flames on set.

The production team built massive practical sets, including a 100-foot aluminium airship and large ikran (mountain banshee) puppets, to stage the action. To heighten realism, the crew ignited real fire during filming, ensuring audiences would not only see the destruction but also feel the intensity.

Second-unit director Garrett Warren explained the approach: “We want people to feel the heat.” The choice reflects Cameron’s long-standing commitment to blending groundbreaking VFX with practical effects to make Pandora’s world feel authentic.

With these bold techniques, Avatar: Fire And Ash promises not just visual spectacle but a visceral experience
