EQUATORIAL GUINEA PRESIDENT’S SON CONVICTED OVER SALE OF NATIONAL PLANE

Ruslan Obiang Nsue, son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema and former director of the national airline Ceiba Intercontinental, has been convicted by the country’s Supreme Court for the unauthorized sale of a state-owned aircraft to a Spanish company.

The court handed him a six-year prison sentence, but ruled that the jail term will be suspended if he repays about $255,000, compensates the airline for damages, and pays an additional fine to the state.

Obiang Nsue, 50 years old, who once served as Secretary of State for Sports and Youth, had been placed under house arrest since 2023 following an order by his half-brother and Vice President, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue.
He was acquitted of separate charges of embezzlement and abuse of office.
This conviction marks another chapter in the long-running controversies surrounding members of Equatorial Guinea’s ruling family, as President Obiang, 83, continues his reign as the world’s longest-serving leader.
