Ned Nwoko: 99.9% of Anioma People Are Igbos
Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, has reaffirmed his stance on the identity of the Anioma people, stating that “99.9 percent of Anioma people are Igbos.”
Speaking on Monday, September 15, 2025, Nwoko emphasized that while some individuals may claim ties to Benin heritage, the overwhelming majority of Anioma communities share Igbo identity, culture, and traditions. He argued that historical events, such as the 1966 Asaba massacre, forced many Anioma families to suppress their Igbo identity for survival, but noted that the time has come for unity and restoration.
The lawmaker urged Igbos in Delta State and beyond to embrace solidarity, stressing that true progress can only be achieved when all Igbos rally together regardless of regional differences.
Nwoko’s comments have added to ongoing debates about Anioma heritage, identity, and the broader call for Igbo unity across Nigeria.
