Niger State Introduces Preaching License, Denies Ban on Religious Activities

The Niger State Government has denied reports of it’s banning on religious preaching but now, but confirmed that all clerics must obtain a licence to preach publicly. The Bureau for Religious Affairs said the new directive is meant to regulate religious activities and prevent incitement, not restrict freedom of worship.

Preachers are required to register with the bureau, undergo screening, and obtain formal approval within a two-month compliance period. The policy currently applies to Islamic clerics, with Christian guidelines expected to follow.

The move has sparked mixed reactions, with some religious leaders and legal experts raising concerns about potential constitutional violations. While the government insists the measure aims to maintain peace, critics argue it may infringe on rights guaranteed under Nigeria’s constitution.
