TUC Rejects Proposed 5% Petroleum Tax, Issues 14-Day Ultimatum to Federal Government
In a strong and uncompromising stance, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has rejected the Federal Government’s proposed 5% excise tax on petroleum products, warning that the decision would only deepen the economic hardship faced by millions of Nigerians.
The union described the move as "insensitive, anti-poor, and potentially destabilizing", especially at a time when citizens are already struggling with high inflation, fuel subsidy removal, and widespread unemployment.
In a statement released earlier today, the TUC issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding an immediate reversal of the planned tax policy. The union warned that failure to comply would lead to massive protests, industrial actions, and potential nationwide disruptions.
> “It is shocking that instead of seeking ways to cushion the effects of recent economic shocks on the Nigerian people, the government is planning to introduce yet another burden,” the TUC stated.
The union also questioned the timing and justification for the tax, arguing that petroleum products are already heavily taxed and form a core component of everyday life in Nigeria. According to the TUC, introducing a new levy would lead to increased transportation costs, food inflation, and further decline in the standard of living.
Labor leaders stressed that Nigerians have continued to show patience and resilience in the face of tough economic reforms, but warned that this new tax could become the tipping point.
