The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has declared Barr. James A. James, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the newly elected Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area.

Announcing the results on Sunday, RSIEC Chairman, Michael Odey, revealed that James polled a total of 37,822 votes to emerge victorious.

“The APC candidate, Barr. James A. James, having scored the highest number of lawful votes, is hereby returned elected as chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area,” Odey stated.

However, noticeably absent from the entire exercise was the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, a native of Opobo/Nkoro. Supporters and kinsmen of the governor, who had gathered at his Ward 5, Unit polling station, reportedly waited for hours only to disperse in disappointment when Fubara failed to appear.

Fubara, alongside members of the State House of Assembly, remains on suspension following the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu, amid the protracted political crisis rocking Rivers.

In the wake of the suspension, President Tinubu appointed the former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), as Sole Administrator of Rivers State pending the resolution of the crisis.
