Canal+ Completes Takeover of MultiChoice, Owners of DStv and GOtv

French media giant Canal+ has officially taken control of South Africa’s MultiChoice Group, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, in a landmark deal valued at about $2 billion (R35 billion).

The acquisition, finalized after regulatory approvals, gives Canal+ effective control of Africa’s largest pay-TV operator, with a subscriber base of over 40 million across nearly 70 countries. MultiChoice has since restructured its board and aligned its financial year with that of Canal+ to ease integration.

The companies have pledged to maintain strong operations in South Africa, support local content production, and continue investing in African sports and entertainment.

Industry analysts say the merger will consolidate Canal+’s dominance across Francophone and Anglophone Africa, creating a continental media powerhouse. For subscribers, no immediate changes to services or pricing have been announced.
