CJN Warns New Magistrates Against Corruption, Urges Integrity in Judicial Service

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has cautioned newly appointed magistrates across the country against engaging in corrupt practices, stressing that integrity and fairness must remain the foundation of their service to the judiciary.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held in Abuja on Saturday, Justice Ariwoola reminded the magistrates that their role is crucial in ensuring justice at the grassroots level, where the majority of Nigerians first encounter the judicial system.

He warned that any act of corruption, bias, or compromise would not only tarnish their reputation but also erode public confidence in the judiciary.

> “You are the face of justice for millions of Nigerians. If you fail in your duty, you fail the people and the nation. Resist every form of temptation that could undermine the oath you have taken today. The judiciary cannot afford to accommodate corruption, no matter the guise,” the CJN stated.

The CJN further emphasized that magistrates must uphold discipline, impartiality, and professionalism in discharging their duties, especially in cases involving vulnerable citizens who may lack resources or influence.

He urged them to see their appointments not as an opportunity for personal enrichment but as a call to service, warning that the National Judicial Council (NJC) would deal decisively with any officer found guilty of misconduct.

Legal experts present at the event noted that the CJN’s remarks come at a time when public trust in Nigeria’s justice system is being tested by allegations of bribery, case delays, and political interference. They stressed that the conduct of magistrates, being at the lower rung of the judiciary, often shapes the perception of justice in the eyes of ordinary Nigerians.

The newly sworn-in magistrates pledged to serve with integrity, fairness, and dedication t

o the rule of law.
