Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele Gets Court Approval for Forensic Review of EFCC Evidence

Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, has secured a major legal boost in his ongoing trial. On Monday, September 15, 2025, the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, granted his request to engage forensic experts to examine electronic evidence tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Emefiele is facing charges of abuse of office and involvement in fraudulent property transactions, with allegations involving sums of up to $4.5 billion and ₦2.8 billion. The EFCC had submitted WhatsApp conversations and a mobile device as key exhibits in the case.

Justice Rahman Oshodi, while delivering the ruling, directed that the forensic review be conducted under strict conditions. The examination must take place in the presence of representatives from both sides, the exhibits must remain in court custody, and the chain of custody must not be broken. The exercise has been scheduled this month
