COLLECTING T-FARE WITHOUT VISITING IS PUNISHABLE BY LAW — POLICE WARNS
The Rivers State Police Command has cautioned Nigerians, especially young women, against the act of collecting transport fare from men without fulfilling the promise of visiting them. According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Grace Iringe-Koko, such behavior amounts to fraud under Nigerian law and is punishable.
Speaking in Port Harcourt, Police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko explained that the act falls under “obtaining money under false pretence,”which is recognized by the Criminal Code Act as a criminal offence. She stressed that once a person requests or accepts transport fare without intending to carry out the agreed visit, the intention becomes fraudulent under Nigerian law and can attract 7 to 20 years in jail.
She cited a past case in Enugu where a woman was ordered to pay ₦150,000 in damages after taking ₦30k for transport fare and failing to visit.
The police urged Nigerians to desist from the practice, stressing that it amounts to fraud.
