Health authorities across Europe have banned trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), a chemical widely used in gel nail polishes, after studies linked it to serious reproductive risks. Effective from September 1, 2025, the ban covers all products containing TPO, whether for personal or professional salon use.

While gel manicures themselves are not banned, salons and brands must now switch to TPO-free alternatives, ensuring consumer safety. The move reflects the EU’s precautionary approach to protecting public health, even as research on human effects remains ongoing.
