JUST IN: Lagos Orders Two Bakery Workers to Two Weeks Community Service for Bread Theft

The Lagos State Government has sentenced two bakery employees to two weeks of community service after they were accused of stealing five loaves of bread from their workplace.

The directive, announced on Tuesday, followed a summary judgment at a magistrate court where the workers admitted to the offense.

According to court filings, the two employees were apprehended after the bakery’s management noticed irregularities in daily stock records and reported the matter to authorities.

In its ruling, the court emphasized the need for deterrence while also considering the economic hardship facing many Nigerians. The punishment, the magistrate said, was meant to serve as both correction and rehabilitation.

The defendants were ordered to sweep and clean public premises for the duration of the two weeks, under the supervision of the Lagos State Task Force.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions, with some Lagosians condemning the theft while others called for compassion, citing the rising cost of living and food insecurity.
