Flood: 545 Households Displaced in Kaduna State
At least 545 households have been displaced following heavy flooding that ravaged several communities in Kaduna State after days of torrential rainfall.
The Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), Hajiya Amina Balarabe, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday. She explained that the flood affected multiple local government areas, with residents forced to evacuate their homes as rising waters submerged houses, farmlands, and businesses.
Balarabe noted that emergency response teams have been deployed to provide relief materials, including food, bedding, and medical supplies, to the displaced families.
> “Our priority is to ensure that victims are sheltered and catered for while we continue assessments of the extent of damage. We urge residents in flood-prone areas to relocate temporarily to safer grounds,” she said.
The agency also revealed that thousands of hectares of farmland have been destroyed, raising concerns about food insecurity in the state.
Meanwhile, Governor Uba Sani has directed the Ministry of Environment and KADSEMA to intensify efforts in assisting victims and to collaborate with the Federal Government for long-term flood control measures.
Experts have attributed the recurring flood incidents to poor drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal, and climate change. Residents, however, are calling for urgent and sustainable intervention to prevent future disasters.
