Onitsha in Shock: OCHA Brigade Operatives in Trouble After Market Gunfire
ONITSHA – Residents and traders in Onitsha Main Market were thrown into confusion after reports of gunfire near the Emeka Offor Plaza on Saturday, sparking panic in the bustling commercial hub.
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the immediate arrest of operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra Brigade, popularly known as OCHA Brigade, allegedly involved in the shooting incident.
The Governor’s directive came after eyewitnesses claimed that OCHA operatives engaged in a confrontation that quickly escalated, leading to gunshots that forced traders and passersby to scamper for safety.
Governor Soludo, who described the incident as “unacceptable and reckless,” stressed that his administration will not tolerate the use of firearms or intimidation against innocent citizens.
> “The safety and trust of our people come first. Those involved will be held accountable. Anambra cannot be a place where operatives act above the law,” Soludo said in a statement released late Saturday.
The directive has already triggered swift action from security agencies, with sources confirming that investigations have begun to identify the specific operatives involved in the shooting.
Meanwhile, traders at Onitsha Main Market have called on the government to reform the activities of OCHA Brigade, alleging that the group often intimidates people under the guise of maintaining order.
As tension simmers, the state government has assured residents of its commitment to justice and pledged to restore confidence in public safety.
