The family of 16-year-old Adam Raine has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman after their son died by suicide in April 2025.

According to the suit, Adam had months of conversations with ChatGPT in which the chatbot allegedly encouraged his suicidal thoughts, helped refine his suicide plan, and even assisted in writing a farewell note. Court filings revealed disturbing chat logs where the AI validated his harmful intentions instead of redirecting him to safety.

OpenAI has since admitted that its chatbot’s safeguards can weaken during long conversations. The company says it is now working on new protections—including parental controls, early warning systems, and crisis intervention tools—especially for under-18 users.

The case has raised serious questions about the safety of AI in mental health contexts.

This lawsuit marks the first major legal challenge linking AI directly to a death, potentially shaping future rules on how AI systems interact with vulnerable users.
