???? BREAKING NEWS: Police Rescue Baby Buried Alive by 20-Year-Old Mother in Kebbi
The Kebbi State Police Command has rescued a newborn baby girl who was allegedly buried alive by her 20-year-old mother, Maryam Atiku, in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, Nafiu Abubakar, disclosed that the incident happened on June 25, 2025, after Maryam reportedly delivered the child and attempted to end her life by strangling her with wrappers, covering her mouth, and burying her in a shallow grave at Malam Yaro bush.
Shockingly, the next day, a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, discovered the freshly dug grave and raised alarm. Community members dug up the site and, to their astonishment, found the baby still alive. She was rushed to the General Hospital in Kamba, where doctors confirmed her condition as stable.
The mother was arrested by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and is currently in custody. During interrogation, she reportedly admitted to the act.
Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, strongly condemned the incident, stressing that child abuse and gender-based violence would not be tolerated. He commended the vigilance of the farmer, whose intervention saved the infant’s life, and appreciated the Kebbi State First Lady, Zainab Nasir, for stepping in to ensure the baby’s welfare.
This shocking case has sparked outrage across the state, with many calling for stronger community sensitization to prevent similar tragedies.
