Namibia to Make University and Vocational Education Free from 2026

Namibia has announced a landmark decision to abolish tuition and registration fees for state-run universities and vocational colleges starting in 2026. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, in her policy statement, said the reform is aimed at ensuring that financial barriers no longer prevent young Namibians from pursuing higher education.

The country already provides free primary and secondary education. Extending this to tertiary institutions is expected to boost enrollment, reduce inequality, and tackle youth unemployment by equipping graduates with the skills needed in the labor market.

However, students will still be responsible for costs such as accommodation, school supplies, and living expenses. While some critics question whether Namibia can sustain the policy financially, many education stakeholders describe it as a bold investment in human capital and the nation’s future.
