American Dreams on hold as U.S deports immigrants

For the first time in 50 years, the U.S. immigrant population has reduced in number by over one million people in 2025 alone. The same country that built its name on “give us your tired, your poor” is now busy tightening borders and sending people back home.
Why? Deportations are on the rise, The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has recruited thousands of fresh officers, and there’s a new “anti-Americanism” test for people applying for green cards and citizenship.
Not just by numbers, but the impact is real.
Farms, health care facilities, and construction companies are already complaining about worker shortages. And Economists warn that the U.S. economy could slow down without immigrants filling crucial jobs.
For Nigerians, the ripple effect is obvious. The U.S. has always been a top destination for students and workers, with billions of dollars in remittances flowing back home every year. But with the doors slowly shutting, many Nigerians may shift their hustle to Canada, the U.K., or Europe.
The so-called land of opportunities is the one now saying “opportunity closed.” After 50 years of growth, America is no longer expanding its immigrant population instead, it’s quietly pushing people out.
