INEC Clears 14 Groups, Rejects 157 in Fresh Party Applications

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared 14 political associations to move forward in the registration process for new political parties, while rejecting 157 others for failing to meet basic requirements.

INEC’s National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, explained that the applications were screened based on constitutional and electoral guidelines. He stressed that passing the first stage does not guarantee registration, as INEC will physically verify each group’s claims before making a final decision.

Among the cleared groups are the African Transformation Party (ATP), Advance Nigeria Congress (ANC), Grassroots Initiative Party (GIP), and Green Future Party (GFP), alongside 10 others. Their leaders have been invited to a briefing on September 17, 2025, at INEC headquarters in Abuja.

INEC reminded associations that registration requires more than a name — groups must have a national presence, unique symbols, and documents.
