Jega Warns Politicians Against Premature 2027 Campaigns
Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has cautioned Nigerian politicians against engaging in premature campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a roundtable in Abuja, Jega described early politicking as a threat to Nigeria’s democratic process. He warned that such actions create an uneven playing field, heat up the polity, and undermine the spirit of the electoral law.
According to him, premature campaigns not only distract leaders from addressing urgent governance issues but also encourage desperation and unhealthy rivalry among political actors. He stressed the need for strict enforcement of electoral rules to ensure fair competition when the official campaign season begins.
