BREAKING: SERAP Drags RMAFC to Court Over Proposed Salary Hike for Tinubu, Governors, Lawmakers

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) over its reported plan to increase salaries for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, lawmakers, and other top public officials.

In the suit, SERAP argued that the proposed salary increment is “unjustifiable and insensitive,” especially at a time when millions of Nigerians are grappling with high inflation, unemployment, and worsening poverty.

The group emphasized that instead of raising salaries for politicians and government officials, the focus should be on improving wages for ordinary workers, teachers, health professionals, and security personnel whose earnings remain insufficient to meet rising living costs.

SERAP further insisted that the planned increment violates the principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness, calling it a misuse of public funds in the face of the country’s economic challenges.

The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeks to stop the RMAFC from implementing the salary review until the case is fully determined.

Public reaction has been intense, with many Nigerians taking to social media to criticize the government, describing the move as “tone-deaf” and a betrayal of struggling citizens.
