Tinubu Declares State Police Inevitable in Fight Against Insecurity
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that the establishment of state police is now unavoidable, stressing that the measure is crucial in addressing Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
The President made this known on Tuesday while speaking on the country’s security architecture, noting that decentralising policing would empower state governments to respond swiftly and effectively to local security threats.
According to Tinubu, Nigeria’s current policing structure is overstretched and incapable of fully tackling issues such as banditry, kidnapping, and violent crimes across all regions. He explained that state policing will bring law enforcement closer to the people, enhance intelligence gathering, and complement the work of federal security agencies.
The President also assured Nigerians that necessary legal and constitutional frameworks will be pursued to ensure accountability and prevent abuse of power at the state level.
> “The reality before us is clear — to safeguard lives and property, we must adapt. State policing is no longer a matter of debate but of necessity,” Tinubu stated.
This renewed call comes as insecurity continues to affect communities in the North-West, North-Central, and parts of the South, with growing pressure from stakeholders, traditional rulers, and civil society groups for urgent security reforms.
Observers say the move, if implemented, would mark one of the most significant overhauls of Nigeria’s internal security system in decades.
