Falana: World Bank, IMF Behind Nigeria’s Full Subsidy Removal
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has accused the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) of pressuring the Federal Government to remove all subsidies in the country.
Speaking during a television interview, Falana argued that the directive from the global financial institutions influenced Nigeria’s recent economic policies, including the complete removal of fuel subsidy. He maintained that such measures place an unfair burden on citizens already struggling with rising living costs.
Falana further noted that while Nigeria was advised to eliminate subsidies, leading Western nations still subsidize critical sectors like electricity, agriculture, and transportation. He stressed that no country in the world operates without subsidies, insisting that the government must prioritize the welfare of its people above external recommendations.
The remarks come amid ongoing public debate about the economic impact of subsidy removal.
