A growing debate over academic freedom has engulfed Texas A&M University following the dismissal of senior lecturer Melissa McCoul. She was fired after a video went viral showing a student objecting to her lesson on gender identity in a children’s literature class.

University officials said the material was inconsistent with the approved course description, prompting the Texas A&M System Board of Regents to order an audit of all courses across its 12 institutions. In the fallout, a dean and the head of the English department were also removed from their administrative posts.

State leaders, including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, backed the action, calling it a necessary step against “indoctrination” in the classroom. But McCoul has appealed, arguing that her rights to academic freedom were violated and warning of political interference in higher education.

The controversy has intensified a wider national debate over how much control state governments should exert over university curricula, particularly on issues of gender and diversity.
