Seventeen-year-old Nafisah Abdullahi Aminu from Yobe State has made global history by winning the TeenEagle World English Language Championship in London, winning over 20,000 contestants from 69 countries.
The Federal Government, at a ceremony in Abuja, honoured her achievement with a ₦200,000 cash prize presented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.
However, the gesture has drawn widespread criticism, with many Nigerians arguing that the reward was too small for such a prestigious global win. Critics say academic excellence should be valued on the same level as sports and entertainment, where athletes are often celebrated with millions, houses, and national honours.
Meanwhile, the Atiku Foundation has stepped in, awarding Nafisah and other winners fully funded scholarships to continue their education.
