18.3 Million Out-of-School Children Declared a National Emergency

The National Association of Seadogs (NAS) has described Nigeria’s education crisis as a “national emergency” after revealing that 18.3 million children and adolescents remain out of school.

At a press briefing marking International Literacy Day, the group launched a one-month Back-to-School campaign running from September 8 to October 8, 2025.

NAS called on the Federal Government to increase education funding, promote digital inclusion, and enforce accountability in the system.

The group warned that unless urgent action is taken, Nigeria risks worsening illiteracy and insecurity due to large numbers of uneducated youth.
