WAEC Introduces CBT for Over 1.9 Million Students in 2025 Exams
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed a full-scale rollout of Computer-Based Testing (CBT)for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Announcing this at a press briefing in Lagos, Mr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC Nigeria, revealed that 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools have been registered to sit for the exams between April 24 and June 20, 2025.
According to him, the move builds on the success of last year’s pilot, where 8,285 private candidates participated in CBT. He explained that the new system will improve the integrity of the examination process, as no two candidates will receive the same sequence of questions.
The Federal Government, through the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has also directed that objective papers in WAEC and NECO be conducted via CBT from November 2025, with full adoption—including essay and practical components—slated for May/June 2026.
However, Dr. Alausa admitted that the country is “not fully ready” for complete digital migration due to infrastructure challenges in rural areas, but assured that government is working with stakeholders to close the gaps before the full rollout.
The shift marks a historic transformation in Nigeria’s education sector, positioning WAEC among global examination bodies embracing technology-driven assessment.
